The objective of the national development is a sustainable human resource improvement, in which the community nutritional status as one indicator. The vision of nutrition development is the family nutrition awareness to bring the optimal nutritional status for the family and community
Food security at the household level is remained as the area to be improved. The main nutritional problems in Indonesia are protein-energy malnutrition (PEM), iron deficiency of anemia (IDA), vitamin A deficiency (VAD), iron deficiency disorder (IDD), and other micro-nutrients deficiencies. The national data (1995-2000) showed the average energy and protein intake was 2000 kcal and 52 g. About 43-50% of households had the energy and protein intake < 70% RDA (about 1500 kcal and 32 g). In addition, the quality of food consumption is also low as indicated by dietary composition that dominated by cereals, but low in animal foods and fruits. It has led to the low intakes of amino acids, iron, zinc, vitamin A, and other micro minerals. At the same time, the emerging nutrition-related diseases due to over nutrition especially among affluent community at urban. And in the near future it?s potentially become a serious problem and need to be addressed.
Partnership between government, industries, international agencies, NGOs and others for improving food consumption and nutritional status program. The government responsible for setting policy and program, supporting regulation, providing facilities and infra-structures. International agencies are potentially to support the technical and financial aspects. Industries can participate in developing and distributing food product for nutrition intervention. NGOs are having capacity on the community action and empowerment. The target of nutritional improvement program is infants, young children, pregnant and lactating mothers, and child bearing ages.
SEAFAST- IPB core competences are in the improving quality, nutrition and food safety through the science and technology. Therefore, SEAFAST-IPB will contribute in the program of improving food quality and nutritional status at the community
All activities covered in these programs directed to:
- Conducting study on dietary pattern, food consumption and nutritional status to obtain data and information for addressing nutritional problems. It includes the study on effectiveness nutrition-related policies and programs.
- Developing policy concept on the nutrition intervention.
- Conducting social engineering through community education in the frame of food consumption and nutritional status improvement.
- Cooperative collaboration with other institution for implementing program on the improving food consumption and nutritional status.
- Providing data and information for supporting program on nutrition improvement based on the studies and literature.
